This week, Giant Eagle is unveiling a new "foodperks!" program in Pittsburgh. Not only can you earn fuel by purchasing groceries, but now you can earn groceries by purchasing gas. Apparently, for every 10 gallons you pump you earn a 1% savings on your next grocery bill. (There are some rules that apply.)
I have to say, the super-shopper in me is excited about the thought of stacking up discounts and "working the system". But the part of me that knows how businesses make their money is well aware that Giant Eagle isn't losing out on this little gimmick. It's all part of their evil plan to turn us into exclusive-Giant-Eagle-shopping minions! With millions of us attracted by their "perks", they can raise prices by the penny and make a killing.
Hey, I love getting a free tank of gas (and a couple of extra containers) just as much as the next girl. But when it comes to saving, what it really comes to down to is the bottom line: PRICES. Case in point: a bag of Kraft shredded cheddar cheese at Giant Eagle will run you over $3.00. If you're lucky, you might hit a 2 for $5 sale and double a coupon on top of that. But yesterday, I bought a bag of the same cheese at Target for $1.52. If I had a coupon, it could have been even better. And no fuelperk would have sweetened the deal. Free gas is great, but not if you have to pay twice as much for groceries.
Anyway, have fun exploring GE's new program and see how it might work for you. If you watch the promotional video on their website, you can earn an immediate 5% bonus by entering your Giant Eagle Advantage card number after the video. It's worth a look!
Shop smart!
